Multi-Drop Deliveries: How to Plan Efficient Routes

Multi-drop delivery looks simple until the tenth stop overruns and the final customer misses their receiving window. Efficient multi-drop is a planning discipline as much as a driving job.

Start with clean stop data

Every stop needs a full address, contact, receiving hours, booking reference if required, and notes on parking or security. Incomplete data is the number-one cause of failed drops and wasted miles.

Sequence by geography and priority

Group stops by cluster, then place hard time windows first. Soft stops fill the gaps. On retail rounds, store opening times and pedestrian zones often dictate the morning order more than pure distance.

Right-size the vehicle

A multi-drop with many small parcels suits a SWB or LWB. Palletised wholesale drops may need Luton or 7.5t with curtainside access. Overloading cube mid-route creates re-handling delays.

Protect POD and communication

Capture proof of delivery per stop and keep the control desk informed when a window is at risk. Customers prefer an early rebook to a silent miss.

When to split the run

If time windows conflict across a wide geography, two smaller dedicated runs can cost less than a single failed multi-drop that needs redelivery. We will flag this at quote stage when we see the stop list.
